Read the interview with Stamatis Poulimenos, Olga Chatzifoti, and Christina Chrysanthopoulou and their winning proposal: Eligence Immersive Cognitive Training (ELICT)

Stamatis Poulimenos, Olga Chatzifoti, Christina Chrysanthopoulou and Maggioli S.p.A. / Alzheimer Athens
The ELICT consortium, a strategic partnership between Maggioli S.p.A. and Alzheimer Athens, utilises Maggioli’s Eligence cognitive training platform to expand the capabilities of cognitive training through XR and telepresence. Maggioli offers specialised expertise in IT solutions, XR technologies, and AI development, supported by Alzheimer Athens’ network of four Day Care Centers dedicated to dementia care.
The project showcases key contributors: Stamatis Poulimenos, a seasoned entrepreneur and senior innovation consultant; Olga Chatzifoti, an accomplished researcher and XR developer specialising in immersive technologies and human-computer interaction; and Christina Chrysanthopoulou, an experienced XR researcher and art director focused on therapeutic virtual reality applications.
Can you give a brief overview of your winning proposal?
What are its key objectives and innovative aspects?
The ELICT project integrates XR technologies and real-time telepresence into Eligence, transforming cognitive training through immersive 3D environments where healthcare professionals appear as holographic guides. Key objectives include developing XR-based cognitive training modules, implementing SPIRIT’s holographic streaming service, adopting secure data handling through SPIRIT’s Confidential Computing framework, and validating the effectiveness of immersive telepresence in cognitive support using -among others- SPIRIT’s Quality of Experience evaluation tool.
The project’s innovative aspects include:
- Integration of memory and attention games with live professional guidance
- Secure data processing using edge computing and Confidential Computing
- Personalised training adaptation through real-time professional monitoring
- Demonstrating capacity for high-speed real-time streaming using SPIRIT’s 5G infrastructure
Unlike existing solutions that lack integrated professional support, ELICT creates a comprehensive system where 3D cognitive tasks are enhanced by real-time guidance, creating an experience that replicates in-person interactions while being accessible remotely.
What motivated you to apply for the SPIRIT Open Call?
SPIRIT’s advanced infrastructure aligns seamlessly with the vision for next-generation cognitive training. Its cutting-edge 5G capabilities, featuring decentralised architecture and cloud-native network functions, provide a robust foundation for real-time holographic interactions. The platform’s Confidential Computing framework, leveraging trusted execution environments (TEEs), ensures top-tier data security for sensitive health information. The increasing adoption of XR-based cognitive training and immersive technologies in healthcare underscores SPIRIT’s potential to pioneer innovative approaches to cognitive support. With the ability to handle complex XR applications while maintaining data privacy through hardware-based security, SPIRIT’s infrastructure is ideally suited for such advancements. Additionally, its edge computing capabilities deliver the low latency required for seamless real-time interactions in cognitive training sessions.
How do you envision this project making an impact?
ELICT aims to revolutionise cognitive training by leveraging current trends in XR-based learning and telehealth solutions. Our project will impact healthcare delivery through:
- Enhanced Engagement: Utilising gamified training and immersive environments to improve user participation and outcomes
- Accessibility: Providing professional cognitive support remotely, extending reach to those with limited access to specialised care
- Data-Driven Improvement: Collecting comprehensive metrics on engagement and performance to continuously refine training approaches
- Innovation Leadership: Demonstrating the practical application of XR technologies in healthcare, setting new standards for telehealth delivery
The project also strengthens Maggioli’s market position while enhancing SPIRIT’s credibility as a platform for innovative healthcare solutions. Through our partnership with Alzheimer Athens, we ensure direct impact on individuals with cognitive challenges while contributing to the broader scientific community by validating the effectiveness of immersive telepresence in healthcare applications.
